Ever wonder how cool it would be to work at Instagram, what computer science really is or where the 3D printers at Lane are? Join us for free workshops Dec 7-11 at Lane for Computer Science Education Week, a national initiative sponsored by Code.org. Workshop topics, room numbers and times are found on the attached flyer. No experience necessary. Seats are limited to 20 and it is first come first served!

Remember the first time you felt like a part of something really special?
Spend just a few hours at Lane Tech, and you will feel that way again. You’ll see literally thousands of kids exploring, growing and building their dreams into reality. And since today is Giving Tuesday, Friends of Lane is thrilled to give you a unique opportunity to “meet” some of these amazing students through a new initiative, “Life at Lane”.
Visit lanetech.org/lifeatlane and you’ll meet Manali who loves technology and Marques, a star athlete. You’ll hear from David, a senior and thespian, as he shares his feelings about acting on Lane’s stage for the last time before college. You’ll follow Rebecca, a musician, as she explains what it’s like to be in the pit band for the “Sound of Music”. Matthew, an LTAC student, will tell you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Aquaponics, and Patricia will inspire you with her stories of her community service and its importance to her. Colleen will share her thoughts as the Robotics team gets ready for competition, and we’ll watch Jacquese as she gets ready for the excitement of I-Days. And photo- journalist Colin will document it all as it unfolds.
Through Life at Lane, throughout the entire school year, you’ll get a peek into the daily lives and accomplishments of our students as they take important steps toward their futures beyond Lane. A future that, with your help, will be tremendously bright. The time to secure that future is now.

Math Team still at #1!
The Lane Tech Math Team competed this past weekend and maintatined the number one position in the city for Division B!
Algebra I: Si Yuan Ye and Daniel King came in third overall in the city and second at our contest. Yongkang Hu came in third at our contest.
Geometry: Leonidas Georgopoulos came in third at our contest.
Algebra II: Tanner Patton and Ari Greenberg came in first place in the city and at our contest. Natalie Simon placed second in the city and at our contest.
Overall the Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II teams all placed first at our contest and the Precalculus team placed 2nd at our contest.
Congratulations to all of our mathletes! Thank you to Coaches Mead and Boland and our support teachers that have consistently helped students: McAdam, Minor, and Meng. This wouldn’t be possible without the support of these teachers and the entire Math Department for developing such fantastic mathletes.

Dear Students, Parents and Staff -
Our school and district goal is to ensure that our students receive a quality education, in a safe and comfortable school, with dedicated, inspiring, and caring teachers. Our school strives towards reaching those goals every day – and even in the face of significant challenges, we’ve made great progress towards them. Lane Tech proves itself time and time again to be the “School of Champions” in academics and extracurricular activities. Our school has the largest Advanced Placement program in the district, state, and nation; the largest and most innovative computer science program; the most robust and award-winning fine arts program; and over 100 unique elective courses from Astrochemistry to Adaptive Music. In addition, our students may participate in over 33 different sports teams and over 100 clubs, which include competitive teams such as robotics, debate, and academic decathlon. As a result of these amazing academic and extracurricular opportunities, our students leave Lane prepared to succeed in college and beyond.
I am writing you today, because this progress is now in jeopardy.
Our school district, Chicago Public Schools (CPS), is facing a $480 million dollar budget shortfall that will have consequences on our staff, class size, and curricular and extracurricular offerings beginning next year or potentially next semester, if no action is taken. Unfortunately, no specific information has been given to schools about the funding loss we could expect to see. Rumors suggest the funding loss could be around 20% of current budgets. For Lane, this means a loss of approximately 45 staff members including teachers, counselors, administrators, security, and other support staff. Without these vital staff members we would not be able to run all of our current courses nor offer all of our extracurricular opportunities. Simply stated, without an adequate budget, we would not be able to sustain our constant growth and support of student success at Lane Tech.
We need your help - this problem cannot be solved without you.
Our elected leaders in Springfield are the ones who will decide whether or not funding will come through. For years, Springfield has cut education funding - asking you as a taxpayer to do more and giving your children less. Now they must decide if they will provide CPS with needed relief in the form of $200 million in pension costs and increased education funding across the state -- or whether they will continue to treat Chicago’s students unfairly.
As parents and educators, we cannot fully focus on the needs of our students with continued financial instability that upends our schools. It is time we let Governor Rauner and our elected representatives know that this era of one-off budget tricks is over, and that we need them to treat Chicago students fairly, by funding Chicago schools and teacher pensions as they do for the rest of the state.
Your voice – as a taxpayer, a voter, and a parent – is so critical for our leaders to hear.

Weekend Wins
Congratulations to Coach Ricks and the Varsity Boys Soccer team who defeated Steinmetz in the first round of state playoffs 8-0. Goals were scored by seniors Owen Finn (2), Cesar Garza, George Ivanov, junior Patrick Fejkiel, and sophomore Arnel Sinagavic (2). The team plays New Trier this Tuesday.
The Lane Tech Cross Country team participated in the city championship over the weekend and greeted spectators with some amazing performances. The varsity girls team placed second overall. They were led by junior Maggie Scholle defended last year’s individual title with another win, completing the 3 mile course in a record 17:39. The sophomore girls also finished in second place and were led by Sofia Newgren and Natalie Gantert. The freshman girls, led by Katelyn Beaudet and Hannah VanderMeulen, WON the city championship. On the boys side, the sophomore team, led by K.C. Pruitt and Kyle Haile, earned a close runner up finish.

LSC Vacancy
The Lane Tech College Prep Local School Council (LSC) has an opening for a Community Representative! In order to be eligible to fill this important vacancy, an applicant must be at least 18 years old, not be enrolled at Lane Tech or have a child enrolled at Lane Tech, and must live within the community boundaries (Peterson on the north to Roosevelt on the south, Racine on the east to Austin on the west). All interested Community Members can either pick up an application in Lane Tech's Main Office or download it from the Lane Tech website (http://goo.gl/4DtvAH). All applications must be returned to Lane Tech by 3:00pm on Friday, November 6, 2015. At the November 12, 2015 Regular LSC Meeting, each applicant will have 2 minutes to address the LSC. The Council will then go into closed session to discuss the applicants before returning to open session to vote on who will be the new Community Representative!

Lane Tech Math Team - First in their division!
Lane's math team hit the ground running this weekend, placing first in the city for division B!
Algebra 1- Henry Beuving, Daniel King, and Izabela Bilska took the top three spots. They are also top three in the city right now!
Geometry- Leonidas Georgopoulos received a 19 out of 20 on the Division A test and is currently 8th in the entire city!
Algebra 2 - Tanner Patton took the number 1 spot for the division B/C test in the city. Urooj Amir, Gretchen Faliszek, and Natalie Simon were not far behind and now hold the 3rd, 4th, and 5th places in the city respectively.
Precalculus - Johan Villanueva was our top scorer and came in 3rd in our region and 15th in the city (taking the division A test). Maggie Scholle came in 6th taking the division B/C test in our region and came in 16th overall throughout the city.

Meet the Teachers Night
Wondering what it feels like to walk a day in your child's shoes? Join us on Tuesday, September 29 at 5:30pm for Lane's Meet the Teachers Night!
During this event, you will have the opportunity to go through your child's schedule and meet all of his or her teachers. You will also have the opportunity to meet your child's counselor, as well as other Lane staff.
Please plan on arriving early so that you can obtain a copy of your child's schedule and a map of the school. You don't want to be late to 1st period!

Please plan on arriving early so that you can obtain a copy of your child's schedule and a map of the school. You don't want to be late to 1st period!

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of introduction to you as the newly appointed Principal of Lane Tech College Prep. I have had the great honor of serving at Lane Tech as a Biology teacher, Academic Center Coordinator, and Assistant Principal. As a member of the Lane Tech staff for several years, we have always embodied the idea of family. As a mother of two, I truly understand the need for students to feel they have a strong support system when they are away from their own families. CPS Ventra Cards
Beginning this 2015-16 school year, Lane Tech has been mandated by CPS to utilize the NEW Student Combo Ventra ID Card.
Important things to know about the new Student Ventra cards:
The new Student Ventra cards include a student picture and schedule, but should only be used as a transportation card. To reduce the risk of loss, students at Lane should not wear their Student Ventra card as their school ID. Instead, students are expected to wear the school ID provided on the first day of school.
The Student Ventra ID Card is not printed at Lane and may take up to 24 hours to be delivered to Lane. The school ID students are expected to wear on a daily basis is printed at Lane and ensures continuous safety and recognition as a student at Lane Tech for the 2015-2016 school year.
The new Ventra cards will replace the old Ventra cards. The old Ventra cards will be inactivated and students will no longer be able to use the old cards beginning 3p.m. on Thursday, September 10. Funds will be transferred from old to new cards.
The new Ventra cards will be sold for $6. This fee has been established by Omicron, the CPS contractor that manages Verify and Card Orders. Lane must pay Omicron $6 for every card printed.
Obtaining your new Ventra Card:

Principal Selection Update
Dear Lane Tech Students, Staff, Parents and Community,
The Lane Tech Local School Council is in the final stage of selecting a New Contract Principal. Our final two candidates are Mrs. Kathryn Anderson and Mr. Clifford Gabor. During our first regular meeting of the school year (Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 6:00pm), the LSC will go into closed session to give final consideration to the qualifications of these two candidates. Once back in open session, the name of one or both of the candidates will be placed in nomination. In order for the LSC to award a contract, a candidate must receive 7 affirmative votes. If neither Mrs. Anderson nor Mr. Gabor receives 7 votes, then we will discuss, in open session, our options. Those may include forwarding the names of the 2 finalists to the CEO of the Chicago Board of Education for him to select either one of those candidates, or beginning the whole selection process again.
We appreciate your patience as we make the important decision of who will lead Lane Tech College Prep!

Illinois public institutions to offer college credit for AP classes

"The Advanced Placement Program® is happy to share with you the tremendous news that Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner last week signed into law HB 3428, legislation requiring all Illinois public colleges and universities to award credit to students who submit scores of 3 and higher on AP® Exams. This applies to entering freshmen at Illinois public institutions of higher education beginning in the fall of 2016.
This new policy will ensure that Illinois students receive the college credits they can earn as a result of their hard work in AP. At a time when AP participation and performance has increased significantly in the state, this law provides more students with a greater opportunity to graduate from college on time.
Our community — including educators, students, and families — played a critical role throughout the legislative process. We appreciate those of you who contacted elected officials expressing support for this important initiative. Your voices clearly were heard, as reflected in the overwhelming bipartisan support the bill received.
We are also grateful for the leadership of the bipartisan group of public officials who worked for this result, including Governor Rauner and the bill's authors: Representatives Carol Sente (Vernon Hills) and Mike Fortner (West Chicago) and Senator Pat McGuire (Crest Hill).

Chicago Public Schools has reconsidered the changes in the student transportation schedule. All of Lane Tech College Prep and LTAC students' school day will begin at 8:00 am and end at 3:15 pm. The new schedule does not include division and students will not be dismissed early on Wednesdays.

Chicago Public Schools has made some difficult choices in an attempt to become a more efficient organization. One of those changes is in the student transportation schedule. This change has forced over 80 schools to shift starting times for students. Lane will, as a result of this change, have two starting times for the 2015-16 school year. Most Lane Tech College Prep students will start at 8:05 am and be dismissed at 3:20 pm. LTAC students will begin second period at 9:00 am and be dismissed at 4:15 pm. This schedule was created to make the best of the unfortunate situation that currently exists at CPS. I have contacted student transportation and made multiple requests that start time be changed from 9:00am to 8:00 am. I have been told that a change to the bus schedule is not possible.
I have heard from many of you about the proposed change of start time for LTAC. Lane Tech College Prep staff is committed to continue providing extracurricular activities for all Lane students. The staff is busy revising schedules to ensure LTAC students have opportunities to continue to take high school classes.

After almost 2 hours of deliberation (on top of the 3 hours last Thursday night), neither of the remaining 2 candidates had sufficient support to be awarded a contract. In order for the LSC to award a contract, one candidate must have the support of at least 7 members. The next LSC Meeting (the Organizational Meeting), will take place on Thursday, July 9th at 9:00am at DeVry University. At that meeting, Principal Selection will be on the agenda. Due to the necessity for a Leader/Principal, the Network Chief will be appointing an "Administrator in Charge."
The LSC is fully aware of the everyone's concerns. We have made great progress up to this point, and are hopeful the we will be able to make a final decision soon. The District, and the Network Chief are deeply involved and committed to helping Lane move forward.

Congratulations to the Lane Tech Math Team who competed in the Illinois Council for Teachers of Mathematics State Finals Math competition at the University of Illinois last weekend. Debate Wins 2015 Chicago Debate League's City Championship!
This past weekend the Lane Tech Debate Team competed in the 2015 Chicago Debate League's City Championships at Northwestern University against 71 other CPS schools, and won!

City Science Fair Results
Congratulations to our Lane Students that competed at City Science Fair!!! Kamila Lungu, Marcelina Puc, Maggie Scholle, Ruben Park, Raisa Munshi, Hugh Yeh, Nejla Dzafic, Daniel Puzcko, Jerry Zhu, and Guochuan Zhang collectively brought home over $1,600 in prizes and awards!

Only 4 high school students in Chicago are chosen to attend International Science Fair each year. Marcelina Puc (Sr.), was chosen for the third year in a row, as one of four students to attend this International Science Fair. Marcelina's project is Mechanism of Apoptotic Action of Colloidal Silver and Bromelain on PC12 and HeLa Cells, also earned the presidential award (highest overall scoring project). Marcelina was recognized at the CPS Board of Education meeting at the last board meeting.
In addition, we extremely proud that two of our students, Daniel Puzcko (Fr.) and Guochuan Zhang (Jr.) were also selected as the only two alternates for the International Science Fair.
Thank you to all teachers and sponsors who have provided support and guidance to our students in developing, implementing, and presenting their STEM projects.

Come see Lane Tech's Varsity Robotics Team compete in the FIRST Robotics Midwest Regional Competition April 3rd and 4th at the UIC Pavilion. This year's game is titled "Recycle Rush" and matches run from 9 am to 5 pm both days. The event is open to the public and admission is free!
Congratulations to Lane Tech's all-girls GEMS robotics team who will be part of of upcoming nationwide museum exhibit "Robot Revolution." The exhibit opens May 21st at the Museum of Science and Industry and features the girls in an interactive video presentation. Only two teams in the entire country were chosen to be a part of this exhibit. Congratulations to our future women engineers!

Lane finishes 2nd at the Academic Decathlon State Championships!
Of the 90 subject area medals awarded (10 events x 3 medals x 3 academic divisions) Lane won 19. In addition, Celso (Trey) Fuentes won the overall bronze medal in the Varsity Division. Our team finished second in the SuperQuiz competition.

Cold Weather Makeup Days
To ensure students receive the valuable instructional time that was intended for February 2 and 19,CPS has made changes to its academic calendar for this school year without disruption to graduation schedules or the start of summer school. These changes are as follows:
-Thursday, June 18, which was scheduled to be the first day of students’ summer break, will now be a regular attendance day for all students.
-Friday, June 19, will now be a regular attendance day for all students.

GEMS takes a crash course with the University of Michigan
GEMS was proud to welcome a few University of Michigan students that shared their knowledge of engineering concepts and principles. Girls were split into several groups where they designed a structure made up of a couple basic materials (pipe cleaners, aluminum foil, tape, etc.) to keep a raw egg from crashing on a model car and crash course. Everyone learned about the steps they can take to find solutions to problems and discovered that engineering is what makes the earth go round and is critical in problem-solving skills. With a few popsicle sticks and some imagination, teams created thoughtful designs and are now on their way in becoming the next generation of successful and bright-minded engineers.

Weekend Wins
Congratulations to our HS and LTAC Science Olympiad teams who each competed and placed in the top three at Saturday's CPS Regional.
The LTAC team won first place at the CPS Science Olympiad Regional, beating the second place team by 40 points! The top 5 teams were: 1- LTAC, 2- Volta Elementary, 3- Whitney Young AC, 4- LaSalle II Elementary, 5- Edison.
The LT high school team earned third place overall. The top 5 high school teams were: 1- Walter Payton, 2- Whitney Young HS, 3- Lane Tech HS, 4- Jones College Prep, 5- Northside College Prep.
Both teams will be moving on to the state competition at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana on April 18th!
Congratulations to all students and coaches Scott Vessalo and Emily Paulson, who also hosted the event.

LT Chess Takes 10th at State!
Congratulations to the Lane Tech Chess Team for finishing 10th at the 41st annual IHSA State Chess tournament this weekend! The tournament hosted 146 teams and 1400 students. Lane was the highest ranking CPS team (Whitney Young 13, Northside 17, Payton 35, Lincoln Park 39). Kudos to Zhuoxun Jiang, Jeremy Prince, and Phillip Tan for earning medals and finishing in the top 5 of their boards.

Last Call for Yearbooks
The Lane Tech Arrowhead and LTAC Artifacts yearbooks are still available for purchase, but not for long! Sales will end on February 27th as we are required to submit our final numbers to the printers. Unlike years past, NO EXTRAS will be available after the books arrive. Arrowhead yearbooks are $55 and LTAC Artifacts are $45. Books can be purchased with cash or money order to Ms. Jennings in Room 137 or directly online at www.jostens.com. Not sure whether or not you've already purchased a copy? Check the list hanging outside of ROOM 137.

This information will only be available to students who have completed the 2015 My Voice, My School Student Survey. If you complete the survey after February 10, you must wait 24 hours before viewing your course request time and/or accessing the course registration site.
Parents, please visit the parent page to link your account. If your account is linked, you will receive approximately 5 emails during the course registration process. Each email will contain important information regarding your child's course selections for the 2015-2016 school year.

Alexandra Kwasny named Assistant Concertmaster for IMEA All-State Orchestra
After a day of auditions, our Sinfonietta Concertmaster Alexandra Kwasny has officially earned the Assistant Concertmaster position of the IMEA All-State Orchestra. This means that she is the second-best violinist in the entire state of Illinois!
The orchestra consists of the top student musicians in the state, playing professional-level music.

Weekend Wins
Congrats to the Freshmen Girls Basketball Team and Coach Lauren O'Malley for winning city! The girls are undefeated!
The Academic Decathlon team won the division in a squeaker beating Northside by 80 points. Of the 63 subject area medals awarded (7 events x 3 medals x 3 academic divisions) Lane won 23. In addition, Lane students, Reijhui Pagala (Soph) and Amy Argentar (Soph) won the overall gold and silver medals in the Honors division, respectively. While, Juan Domingo (Sr) and Sergej Kulikov (Soph) won the overall bronze medals in their respective divisions, Scholastic and Varsity.
Lane also won the SuperQuiz competition for the North/Northwest region but was narrowly defeated by Whitney (38-35) for the overall competition title. This event, which is open to the public, is a stand alone competition and all regions compete at the same time together.
Here is an individual breakdown of medal winners:

Cold Weather Makeup Days
To ensure students receive the valuable instructional time that was intended for January 7 and 8,CPS has made changes to its academic calendar for this school year. These changes are as follows:
-Friday, January 30, which was scheduled to be a School Improvement Day with no classes, will now be a regular attendance day for all students.
-Wednesday, June 17, which was scheduled to be the first day of students’ summer break, will now be a regular attendance day for all students.
-Students’ summer break will begin on Thursday, June 18.

Math Team
Congratulations to the Lane Tech Math Team for finishing first in their division in this weekend's CCML (City of Chicago Math League) competition here at Lane Tech.
The team was led with first place finishes by the Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 teams.
Additionally, sophomore Maggie Scholle placed 3rd in Geometry (Accelerated); juniors Johan Villanueva placed 2nd in Algebra 2 (In Progress), and seniors Magda Dziadkowiec and Alex Paez finished 2nd in Precalculus (Accelerated).

Academic Decathlon
On Saturday, Lane hosted its 5th Annual Academic Decathlon Invitational. Nine schools and nearly 100 students attended including Northside, Lincoln Park, Von Steuben, Mather, Amundsen, Social Justice, Little Village and Foreman.
Lane Tech's team won going away topping our nearest competitor, Northside, by over 5,000 points. Seven subject matter events were tested and of the 63 medals awarded (7 events x 3 divisions x 3 medals) Lane secured 39.
Showing true team strength and overall consistency across subject matters, Rej Pagala (Soph.) won the overall gold medal in the Honors Division closely followed by Amy Argentar (Soph.) who won the silver.
In the Scholastic Division, Lane swept the top three overall scorers with Mohammed Khan (Sr.) taking the gold and his teammates, Ethan Recinto (Soph.) and Ricardo Ortiz (Soph.) taking the silver and bronze, respectively.
In the Varsity Division, Trey Fuentes (soph.) won the overall silver medal while Crystal Pham (soph.) won the overall bronze.
Our next event is the CPS Regional Competition to be held at Chicago Vocational High School on January 24th
