Weekend Wins
This weekend nine members of our LTAC Math Team competed in the 2014 MATHCOUNTS Competition. It was a great experience for our team competing against other selective enrollment, private, and suburban schools. Eighth grader Abhinav Goyal placed 4th in the selective enrollment/gifted schools division and qualified for the state competition March 8th. Congratulations to the students and coach Nick Markese.
Congratulations to all the chorus students who participated in the Chicago Public School Solo and Ensemble contest this past Saturday. Lane Tech was among the top three schools with the highest number of participants, approximately 80 Lane Tech Choir students performed. In ensemble participation: 48 students received High Honors Superior Ratings (Perfect Scores), 16 participated in Superior Ratings and 16 in Excellent ratings. The following students received High Honors Superior/Superior Ratings in solos:

Congrats to LTAC Robotics!
Congratulations to the LTAC Robotics Teams who competed in the State Tournament this weekend. Captains Brody Frapoly and Megan Altman helped to nearly double the points scored by their respective teams from their performance at the City Tournament. Other key members were Grant Adams, Thomas West and Fotini Kaim for Team #331 and Nick Udell, Daniel Jablonski and Nickolai Waypa for Team #15581.

Students who complete the survey will receive a demerit reduction (1 demerit). The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Print out your completion page and turn it into the main office to have the demerit removed. The library assistants have been told that if you print it out in the library, the copy should be free of charge.

Demerit Reduction Opportunities
There is another demerit reduction opportunity being offered next week. Students who come to school on time all 5 days the week of 2/17 (in class and advisory before national anthem plays) will have 2 demerits removed. This is open to all students.
Seniors are reminded that this Friday is the deadline to get your FAFSA completed in order to get a demerit removed.
The Aeropostle Jeans drive is still going on in the main office. Students who drop off 1 or more pair of jeans will get one demerit removed. Make sure to have an adult witness and sign the form on the main office counter.

Discover Rowing
On February 12, Chicago Rowing Foundation will be offering a free learn to row opportunity for CPS high school students called "Discover Rowing".
There will be two sessions: Session 1 from 10:00am-12:00pm & Session 2 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Students that attend will learn to use the equipment and get a tour of the boathouse.

What Can You Do to Improve Attendance?
Establish and stick to the basic routines (going to bed early, waking up on time, etc.) that will help your child develop the habit of on-time attendance.
Academic Decathlon team wins division!
Congratulations to Paul Stepek and the Academic Decathlon team on their regional competition. Lane won the division by approximately 3,000 points. Of the 63 subject area medals awarded (7 events x 3 medals x 3 academic divisions) Lane won 23. In addition, Lane students won the gold medal for overall performance in all three academic divisions and the silver medal in the Honors division and the bronze medal in the Scholastic division.

Study Abroad - Greece

GEMS & Aquaponics visit Loyola's Institute of Environmental Sustainability
On Thursday, January 30, GEMS club members and Aquaponics students visited Loyola's Institute of Environmental Sustainability. In addition to learning about the school and taking a tour of the campus, the students visited the new Institute of Environmental Sustainability. The building itself is heated and cooled using a geothermal system, allowing the temperature to remain cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The roof is shaped to collect rainwater, which is used in the plumbing system so that each toilet flush in the utilizes recycled water.
The highlights of the visit included a look at the greenhouse, which houses Loyola's very own Aquaponics system, and the Biodiesel Lab. Much like Lane's Aquaponics Lab housed in 128, the system at Loyola features a closed system in which tilapia produce waste, microbes & worms convert the waste to fertilize plants, and the plants filter water that return to the fish.
Using vegetable oil from the in-house cafeteria, Loyola staff and students create biodiesel in the Biodiesel Lab. Then, they filter the oil and convert the entire product into biodiesel that can be used to run machinery or into glycerin that can be used as soap. How much vegetable oil is needed to make the fuel? Our GEMS and Aquaponics students learned that it is a 1:1 ratio! This means that for each gallon of vegetable oil, the Biodiesel Lab can produce a gallon of fuel. Pretty amazing, right?
All our students had a great time visiting the campus and are now more aware of different ways in which we can conserve resources and solve environmental problems. Thank you to Dr. Nancy Tuchman, the founding director of Loyola's Institute of Environmental Sustainability, and to the entire staff and student body for welcoming us!

Attention Juniors and Seniors interested in NHS
There will be an information meeting on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 during “0” period in the auditorium. Students will be picked up at 7:15 a.m. in the student lunchroom. Eligible juniors and seniors must have a 3.5 weighted GPA.
