GEMS Visit the Shedd Aquarium

On Monday, November 26, GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science) visited the Shedd Aquarium.  In addition to viewing the Jellies and Wild Reef exhibits, they participated in the Shedd's Learning Labs to further explore the field of Marine Biology.  In Mission Marine Habitat, the girls worked in groups to designate a marine protected area.  They collaborated, used problem solving skills, and analyzed and presented data in order to support their decisions.  In Exploring Pathology: Fish Dissection, students performed a necropsy in order to diagnose a striped bass.  They examined all parts of the fish, recorded their observations, and presented their findings.

Thanks to the Lane Tech PTSO, Shedd Aquarium, and Target Bus Fund Program for providing our students with this great opportunity!

Happy November!

Fun Fact:
November is also referred to as Movember because since 2004, various charities have raised awareness and funds for men's health issues.  But why is it called Movember?  During the month of November, men from all over the world grow Mustaches in support of the Movember Foundation's goal to "change the face of men's health."
