Lane Tech's Computer Science Open House

December 6th, 2014 – RSVP at http://goo.gl/mms7VI

We are excited to have Brian Fitzpatrick, from Google, come speak as our keynote speaker. Brian started Google’s Chicago engineering office in 2005, and currently leads Google’s Transparency Engineering team, which uses data to help protect free expression and free speech on the web. He also founded and leads Google’s Data Liberation Front, a team that systematically works to make it easy for users to move their data both to and from Google (e.g. via Google Takeout). He serves as both thought leader and internal adviser for Google’s open data efforts and has previously led the Google Code and The Google Affiliate Network teams.

In addition to this great opportunity, we will be offering the workshops listed below. These will be taught by Lane Tech’s Computer Science department so this will be a chance for you to interact directly with our teachers. The titles of the workshops and the agenda are listed below. Help Make FIRST Robotics an IHSA Sport

Our students at Lane have competed all the way to the World Championship for Robotics for the past two years.  Lane Tech is the only school in the district (there are 664 schools) that has a robotics team that has ever competed at this level.  No other school in Chicago has ever done this before.  IHSA has broadened its guidelines to allow chess and drama to be included as an IHSA recognized activity but has yet to include robotics.  Due to the competitive nature of robotics, we would like the IHSA to consider officially recognizing and including FIRST Robotics.  Please take a minute out of your day to sign the following petition for the IHSA to include Robotics.  This would mean a great deal to our students and school.

Happy October!

Fun Fact
While October is the 10th month of the year, its Latin root of "Octo" implies that it would be associated with the number 8.  Why, you ask?  The old Roman calendar had 10 months, with October being the 8th month.  The later addition of January and February to the modern day calendar resulted in October becoming the 10th month.
